Hello my dear JP Squad!!
Hope you’re all well :)
SHARING IS CARING
As always, thanks for reading and sharing this blog! Please feel free hit the SHARE button to spread this around. I’m so excited about the Best Of coming out and the impending tour, and your support in passing on the news is always appreciated!
I’ve been getting some interesting questions from you guys, and I thought I’d share this somewhat more light hearted one:
Dan from Melbourne (currently in China) asked:
"Do singer songwriters as yourself enjoy karaoke?" and "What songs if any do you like to sing?"
Well Dan, I’m glad someone FINALLY asked me this!
I can only speak for myself, but I LOVE Karaoke.
In fact, the first time i ever hung out with Kev Mitchell, (AKA Bob Evans,) we enjoyed smashing out some Karaoke together in Sydney.
It was a brave move by him, since I was already at this joint with a bunch of my friends, and he didn’t know any of them….but we sang, and we danced and have remained friends ever since.
This is a picture of that actual night back in 2006. Just a couple dudes loving life. I can’t remember which song it was, and the TV screen doesn’t offer many clues.
My personal favourite jam at Karaoke though, is Hey Ya, by Outkast.
So this past month has largely been occupied by the announcement of the Best Of, and the tour that I’ll be doing where I’ll play Memories and Dust IN FULL, and then play a second set of Best Of songs and probably a couple of the rarities too.
Getting the Best Of together has been a monumental task, but I’m so pumped about it. It’s been a chance for me to properly reflect on the last 10 years since M&D came out, and everything that’s happened both career wise, and also personally. Getting Jefferton James to put together a little doco with all the footage I’ve been collecting has been so great too, and he’s done an amazing job.

Obviously a lot can happen in 10 years! 6 albums, EP’s, Mini Albums, countless tours, and on a personal level, marriage, kids, setting up a home.
I was particularly gratified to share a bunch of B-sides and Demos that I’ve done over the years on this release. I’ve always loved all these songs, but somehow there wasn’t a place for all of them on my albums. Seeing them find a life outside my brain, (and my computer) feels like mental spring clean for me, clearing up creative space for new stuff.
Speaking of which, there’s also a couple of brand new songs on the Best Of, one of which we made a clip for, which you can see below.
I’m so happy to share this with you all!
Documentary Episode 2
Another pretty huge project that I’ve been involved in for a while now, is a new ABC kids TV show, created by the wonderful Justine Clarke.
Justine and I met through our work with the Indigenous Literacy Foundation, and wrote a great track to raise money for the ILF.
When she asked me to co-write some songs with her for the new show, I absolutely jumped at the chance. Creatively, it’s been one of the most enjoyable musical projects I’ve ever done. Justine was super involved creatively, whilst also giving me a lot of freedom to pursue sounds that I felt fell outside the “normal” kids music that we’ve all heard.
The best part is my 7 and 4 yr old sons have been really engaged with it, and seem really proud of my role in it, which is super gratifying as a parent. :)
The show is called Ta Da, and I’ve co-written 4 of the songs, and was lucky enough to also co-write the theme song!
The best part for me was stretching my technical wings. I recorded, produced, and mixed the songs that I was involved with myself, in my studio at home. Apart from live drums, live horns and some amazing pots and pans percussion, I played all the instruments on the tracks, and it was very much in the spirit of a child’s ability to be creative, in the sense that I was just kinda mucking around with it all. No agendas, just playing.
Check out the promo for it below, (that’s one of my tracks in the background there) and get ready for it to be a massive hit!

This month I wanted to give you another new track, to juxtapose all the nostalgia!
This is a song called Howlers, and it was so new at the time of recording I had to read most of the lyrics from my book!
It’s already developed a lot since I recorded this version, and I have a cool idea for some collaboration on this track when the time comes to record it properly.

At the start of my career I spent a lot of time going back and forth between here and the UK. one of the best things about doing this Best Of release is remembering all those crazy times I had over there.
I've added some new tracks to the JP Squad Spotify playlist this month. Check it out and SHARE (https://open.spotify.com/user/joshpykemusic/playlist/1UIEReY0r5OeU4CNSLtBGa) it here
